Recipe: Watermelon Bourbon Slush

It’s August, y’all. The days are getting hotter, and down here in Austin the thermometer is regularly reaching over 100 degrees. For those who still want to enjoy the outside, a cold drink is a necessity — and thankfully a Watermelon Bourbon Slush is just what you’re looking for.

Here in Austin, and I’m sure most places in the US, watermelon is everywhere in the summer. Walk into any local grocery store and there will be a pallet of watermelons ready to go, and diced watermelon chunks waiting in the produce section for the lazier among us.

My wife came up with this recipe (despite not being a bourbon drinker) when we needed to have something to keep our guests cool during a backyard party. Our guests were huge fans of watermelon (again, aren’t we all?) and I was looking for a drink to use with our local Austin produced whiskey from Treaty Oak Distillery. The end result, combined with some blueberries for color and good measure, is a delicious and refreshing drink to sip on in the heat of the afternoon.

Heads up, this one takes a bit of prep work. At least six hours ahead of time, you need to put some cubed watermelon chunks into the freezer so they have time to solidify, preferably leaving them overnight. But once those watermelon chunks are frozen, you can whip this up in just a couple minutes.

Ingredients (makes 2 servings):

  • 1 cup watermelon chunks
  • 1/2 cup watermelon juice (liquid)
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • Some blueberries or other garnish

First, add the frozen watermelon chunks and the watermelon juice to a blender. The chunks alone won’t blend well, so the juice is there to keep things moving and make it an actual slush.

Next, add the bourbon. Feel free to increase that dosage as you see fit and depending on the strength of your spirit. The Treaty Oak Red Handed Bourbon is a strong spirit and only needed two ounces — depending on your spirit of choice, your mileage may vary.

Blend well.

Once the ingredients have been blended pour into two Old Fashioned glasses. Garnish with a couple of blueberries or substituted fruit or garnish of your choice (mint goes great too). Sit back, relax, sip and enjoy!

  1. While freezing the watermelon chunks also freeze the blueberries. They will act as ice cubes to keep the drink chilled
